In 1753, Scottish merchant John Carlyle completed the mansion for his bride, Sarah Fairfax, a daughter of one of Virginia’s most prominent families. It was designed in the style of a Scottish/English manor house and is lavishly furnished; Carlyle, a successful merchant, had the means to import the best furnishings and appointments available abroad for his new Alexandria home. One of Virginia’s most architecturally impressive 18th-century homes, Carlyle House also figured prominently in American history. A social and political center, the house was visited by the great men of the day, including George Washington.
Twenty years after John Carlyle's death, in 1800, the Bank of Alexandria building on the south west corner of Cameron and Fairfax streets was built on the north west corner of the property. Over the years, additional pieces of the property were sold off and construction ensued, eventually consuming the entire front lawn of Carlyle House. In the years leading up to the Civil War, the Carlyle House complex was known as Green's Mansion House Hotel.
George Washington, who was appointed as major in the provincial militia in February 1753 by Robert Dinwiddie (Virginia's Royal Governor), urged Braddock not to undertake the expedition and became a volunteer aide-de-camp to Braddock. Coincidentally, Sarah gave birth to their first son that same night.
The house is furnished in period pieces; however, only a few of Carlyle’s possessions remain. In an upstairs room, an architecture exhibit depicts 18th-century construction methods. Braddock was borne off the field by Washington and Col. Nicholas Meriwether, he died on 13 July from wounds suffered in the battle. Before he died, Braddock left Washington his ceremonial sash that he wore with his battle uniform, as well as his two pistols. Some of his last words were, "Who would have thought?" Reportedly, Washington always took this sash with him for the rest of his life, both as the commander of the Continental Army or for his presidential duties.
